Jane Lander Painting
Jane Lander has had an established art practice for more than 30 years. Her work is held in many public and private collections including Newcastle Art Gallery, Lake Macquarie Art Gallery and Broken Hill Art Gallery. She has been a finalist in The Dobell Drawing Prize, The Blake Travelling Art Prize and the Kilgour Art Prize. In 2010 she was the recipient of the Windmill Trust Scholarship and has won the Broken Hill Art Prize twice.
In 2007 Jane travelled to India and was drawn, like many, to the holy city of Varanasi. One of the oldest cities in the world, Varanasi lies on the Ganges, the river of India which plays a sacred and secular role in daily life. Lander’s experience has inspired a vivid body of work and led to the development of a figurative impulse in her practice.
After a highly successful solo exhibition simply named Varanasi at Newcastle Art Gallery, Jane was commissioned by Monsoon Living to create a few special works in a similar style, this is one of those works.
